Why do so many Dutch (children) ride bikes without wearing a helmet?

Cycling in the Netherlands is more than just a way of getting around—it’s a way of life. With a vast network of bike lanes and a culture built around cycling, it’s no surprise that so many Dutch children cycle without helmets. However, as e-bikes become increasingly popular, there’s a shift in how helmets are viewed, especially when it comes to children.

In 2010, Chris and Melissa Bruntlett, a Canadian couple, made a significant lifestyle change. They sold their cars and began cycling around Vancouver, BC, with their two young children. Their exploration of cycling culture led them to the Netherlands, where they were inspired by the country’s exceptional cycling infrastructure and its widespread adoption of biking as a daily activity.

Chris and Melissa visited five Dutch cities to study the country’s cycling infrastructure. They met with local leaders, observed how cycling was seamlessly integrated into everyday life, and documented their findings. One of the most striking things they discovered was how safe and comfortable cycling in the Netherlands was—so much so that many Dutch children cycle without helmets. In fact, the Netherlands’ bike lanes, dedicated signals for cyclists, and traffic laws designed to prioritize cyclists have created a safe environment for biking that doesn’t require extra protective gear for most cyclists.

For years, the absence of helmets has been a norm in the Netherlands. The robust cycling infrastructure and the generally calm traffic make biking a safe and efficient means of transport for people of all ages, including children. However, with the rise of e-bikes—electric bikes that allow cyclists to travel faster and with less effort—there’s been a shift in attitudes towards helmet-wearing, especially for younger riders.

So, while the Dutch have long embraced cycling without helmets, the conversation is evolving. Many families are now opting for helmets for their children, especially when they’re riding e-bikes or cycling at higher speeds. It’s a balance between maintaining the safety of cycling while adapting to new cycling trends and technologies.
