In the heart of the Netherlands, Utrecht has become home to the world’s largest bicycle parking facility, located beneath a raised city square near the central railway station. With space for an incredible 12,500 bikes, this futuristic parking garage is a true landmark of innovation.
Above ground, the city square is a vibrant hub featuring outdoor cafes and shops, offering a bustling urban atmosphere. Cyclists can easily access the facility by riding beneath the square, where they can park their bikes on one of three levels. From there, it’s just a short walk to either the train station or the town center. The entire parking area is well-lit and designed with clear lines of sight, ensuring safety and convenience for cyclists.
Opened in 2019, this state-of-the-art facility includes dedicated staff offices on each level to assist with bike parking management. The system also works much like a car parking garage, helping cyclists find available spots quickly. By using built-in sensors in the bike racks, when a bike is parked, the system sends an automatic signal to a computer. Monitors throughout the facility display real-time information on which spaces are open.
Additionally, the system helps identify abandoned bikes. If a bicycle remains in the garage for longer than the allowed ten-day period, the facility manager can take action to remove it, freeing up space for other cyclists. Thanks to this system, the garage has seen a 30% increase in available parking spots by removing long-term, unused bikes, making the storage area more efficient.
Utrecht isn’t the only city in the Netherlands with multi-story, fully automated bike parking garages. If you’re planning a cycling tour in the country, you’ll likely encounter these cutting-edge facilities in other cities as well!
