ContactHow Dutch companies provide bicycle facilities to employees
The Dutch are known for living in a cycling paradise, and like people everywhere, they prefer to pay as little in taxes as possible. In a clever move, the Dutch government has introduced laws that allow businesses to minimize their tax burden by investing in bicycle facilities for their employees. And it’s paying off. Today, bicycles make up 27% of all traffic in the Netherlands, with cities like Amsterdam seeing numbers as high as 36%.
Although these numbers are impressive, the government is not stopping there. The popularity of e-bikes has surpassed all expectations, and with over 50% of car trips in the Netherlands being under 7.5 kilometers (about 4.6 miles), there is still significant potential for improvement. After all, 7.5 kilometers is a distance many Dutch people find easily manageable on a bike.
Government Initiatives to Encourage Cycling
To further encourage cycling, the Dutch government has implemented several initiatives:
- Reimbursement for Cycling to Work: Employees can receive a tax-free reimbursement of €0.19 per kilometer for cycling to work, which is the same rate as car travel reimbursements.
- Bike Leasing: Companies can lease bikes for their employees to use for commuting. This is especially useful for those who travel longer distances to work. The rise of mobile bike repair services has made bike leasing even more practical.
- Company Bikes: Instead of providing a company car, employers can offer employees a company bike, allowing them to cycle to work and back home. This initiative is gaining popularity, especially among those who prefer a more sustainable, cost-effective commuting option.
- Tax on Company Bikes: For employees using company bikes, 7% of the retail price of the bike is added to their taxable income. This ensures that the bike benefits are accounted for in the employee’s overall compensation.
Cycling Infrastructure
The Dutch government is also investing heavily in cycling infrastructure, with a particular focus on cycling highways. These are wide, dedicated bike paths that have priority at almost all intersections. Thanks to these improvements, cycling is often just as fast, if not faster, than driving, making it a practical and efficient mode of transport.
With continued government support and growing public interest, the Netherlands is well on its way to becoming an even more bike-friendly nation. And with the rise of e-bikes, it’s easier than ever for everyone to hop on a bike and make cycling their preferred mode of transportation.
