What is the best distance for cycling tour

At Holland Bike Tours we offer three levels of physical fitness as a measure for the degree of difficulty and distance for cycling tour. This way you can always choose the best distance for cycling tour  for your party:

EASY – You cycle 1-3 times a week and in normal physical condition. | Easy Tours
BALANCED – You cycle 3-5 times a week and are in good physical condition. | Moderate Tours
ACTIVE – You are well-trained and cycle longer distances. | Challenging Tours

* Cycling on a E-Bike? Then also the moderate tours can be seen as easy!

When planning your bike tour, the right distance each day depends on your personal preferences and goals. If you’re more focused on sightseeing and frequent stops at points of interest, you may prefer a shorter, easier route that allows you to soak in the scenery.

Flexible Routes to Suit Your Style

Our tours offer flexibility, with two route options for many of our set itineraries. You’ll receive both routes on GPS, allowing you to decide each morning whether you’re in the mood for a longer or shorter ride. For example, our Old Towns and Villages Tour offers this flexibility across three days, letting you tailor the experience to your needs on the go.

We also specialize in creating customized tours that fit your preferences. For groups of 4 or more, we often design a single route for the whole group, with an extra loop around the town for more experienced cyclists who want a more challenging ride. We can also balance longer and shorter days during your multi-day tour, giving you time to explore certain towns on foot and truly experience the local culture.

General Recommendations

On your first day of cycling, we recommend starting with a shorter distance than you might normally ride. After all, you won’t be at your peak fitness level on day one, and you may also need extra time to get to your starting point. Additionally, Tour Start at Holland Bike Tours includes about an hour to get properly fitted to your bike and go over the route and GPS instructions.

As your tour progresses, you’ll notice that your body adjusts, and after a few days of riding, you may feel more comfortable with longer distances. Your legs will naturally adapt to the cycling rhythm, and soon you’ll be able to ride further without much effort.

Another key tip is to plan for rest days during your tour. We recommend taking at least one rest day per week, where you can relax and explore a charming town or village at a slower pace. These breaks are essential for letting your body recover and giving you time to fully enjoy your surroundings. Your Travel Advisor will be happy to help you plan these layover days for a balanced experience.

A Common Mistake to Avoid

One mistake that many cyclists make is the desire to cover as much distance as possible each day in an attempt to see as much of the country as they can. While it’s understandable, this approach can diminish the joy of the ride. The beauty of cycling through the Netherlands is in taking your time and truly experiencing the landscape, towns, and culture at a relaxed pace.

If you find you’re pressed for time but want to explore more, it’s better to come back for another tour! The Netherlands has many diverse cycling regions, and each offers a unique experience. By returning, you’ll get to explore new areas, making each trip even more exciting than the last.
