ContactHow can I best lock my bike (in the Netherlands)?

Bikes are lightweight and easy to transport, which makes them convenient for owners—but also appealing targets for thieves. To ensure your bike stays safe, it’s important to take a few simple precautions and invest in the right lock.
Choosing the Right Lock
When selecting a lock, it’s a balance between price, weight, and security. The key is to choose a lock that will slow down a thief long enough to discourage theft.
- Cable and Chain Locks: These are flexible and easy to use, making them ideal for locking your bike to various structures. However, they tend to be less secure than U-locks and are more susceptible to cutting.
- U-locks: Stronger and more secure, U-locks offer better protection but are less flexible due to their shape. Their strength comes at a higher price, but they are a solid investment for keeping your bike safe.
- Combination of Both: Using a combination of a U-lock and a chain or cable lock can provide added security, giving thieves more challenges and time to work through.
How to Lock Your Bike Properly
When locking your bike, the first thing to consider is what you are locking it to. Ideally, use bike racks or designated locking posts. If these aren’t available, sturdy streetlamps or tall street signs (over 6 feet/2 meters) can also be good options. Avoid locking to flimsy trees, bushes, or removable poles, as they are easy for thieves to bypass. Be aware that security personnel may remove bikes locked to infrastructure such as handrails or gates if they appear hazardous.
Always lock through the bike frame, not just the seat post, as thieves can easily slip off a lock placed around the seat. If your bike has removable wheels, consider running your lock through a wheel as well as the frame. Additionally, secure quick-release components separately or take them with you to prevent theft.
Locking Etiquette
Proper locking etiquette is simple and mostly intuitive. Be considerate of others:
- Never lock your bike to someone else’s.
- Don’t overcrowd racks or bike parking areas—be mindful of space.
- Ensure your bike isn’t blocking or tangling with others.
- If you lock your bike to a tree, be gentle and avoid causing damage.
At Holland Bike Tours, all of our recreational bikes and E-bikes come with a built-in frame lock and cable. For road bikes, we provide a lightweight cable lock.
Bicycle Insurance
If you’re visiting the Netherlands for a holiday, check if your travel insurance covers your bike, not just your luggage. We also offer bike theft insurance for guests starting their tours with us. If your bike is stolen, it’s important to report it to the police—although the chances of recovery are low, this is essential for insurance purposes.
For peace of mind, we provide secure bike storage each evening at your accommodation, so you can rest easy knowing your bike is safe.
